Importance of a CO alarm in your home

Darren Mayne • Sep 14, 2021

You wouldn't live in a house without a smoke detector, so why ignore the importance of a carbon monoxide alarm?

As part of Gas Safety Week 2021, we are highlighting the importance of gas safety in your home. The crucial part of gas safety is ensuring that your home is equipped with a working carbon monoxide detector.

Carbon monoxide is odorless and invisible, it is a silent and deadly killer.

Any gas appliance, regardless of its age or upkeep an produce highly poisonous gas, known as carbon monoxide or CO. It is produced by the incomplete burning of natural gas or liquefied petroleum gas. It is usually the cause of gas appliances which have not been properly fitted or maintained.

Against popular belief, even a new gas appliance can be at risk of leaking carbon monoxide into your home.

It does not have to look old and dilapidated to cause problems. But inhaling even small amounts of carbon monoxide can cause poisoning which can lead to paralysis, brain damage or even death.

According to Gas Safe Register, the key symptoms to look out for are:

  1. headaches
  2. dizziness
  3. nausea
  4. breathlessness
  5. collapse
  6. loss of consciousness

You can save your life and that of your families for as little as £15. Carbon monoxide alarms are not expensive nor do they require professional fitting. They can simply be mounted to a wall with a simple screw (always follow manufacturer's guidelines with your purchase) and will sound similar to a fire alarm/smoke detector when activated. Make sure any alarm you buy is marked to EN 50291 and has the British Standards Kitemark.
