How to become more eco-friendly at home

Darren Mayne • Mar 26, 2021

Saving water, waste and reducing your energy, one step at a time.

We are always on the look out for new ways to be that little more eco-friendly around the home. There are increasing pressures for everyone to do their bit to help protect the planet. Mayne Gas Heating have short listed some top ways to be more eco-conscious in your kitchens and bathrooms at home.

New boiler installation

Installing a new boiler might seem like a drastic option if you're just looking to become more eco-friendly. But if your current boiler is more than 10 years old, there are stacks of reasons why this is a realistic and feasible option:

  1. Reduced energy consumption,
  2. No need to worry about repair bills and call outs,
  3. Reduced annual servicing or boiler care plans,
  4. Opportunity to remove a bulky water tank and opt for a combi boiler.

Smart showers

Smart showers are becoming increasingly popular. They work by adapting the flow rate based on your personal needs. They also require a lower energy usage, yet still provide a great showering experience. Coupled with a smart "eco" shower head, which helps to improve the water flow rate a smart shower has many benefits. Many smart showers also come equipped with timers which allow you to pre-set your required shower time and will prompt you to end your shower when the time comes to an end. This is an effective way in saving excessive water consumption for those who often spend far too long contemplating life in a warm shower!

Refillable bottles

Whether in the kitchen or bathroom, always try to opt for refillable bottles, many soaps now come in dispenser packs so you reduce the number of plastic bottles required. You can even go as far as buying your own personalised bottles and keep them refilled, using them time and time again and cutting back on waste!

Switch to LED lighting

LED lighting is widely regarded as more efficient than ordinary lighting since it uses up to 90% less power than some alternatives. Not only are they more efficient, but they are also cheaper and longer-lasting, which means they need replacing far less often.

Ditch the single-use items

Face wipes, cotton pads and disposable razors, all items of guilty of very few uses before ending up in landfill. Ditch the cotton wool in exchange for a flannel, or bamboo face cloth. Which can be used on multiple occasions, washed and reused without having to be thrown away.
