Ofgem says they plan to remove gas central heating from all homes by 2050.

Combating greenhouse gases

Ofgen - the regulator for gas and electricity in the UK has said that it plans to remove gas central heating from all homes in a huge shake up to help protect our planet.

The first wave of these plans start in 2025, where all new homes will be banned from having gas boilers and gas hobs fitted in them. These gas boilers will be replaced with more green and efficient sources of heat and energy such a hydrogen boilers or air source heat pumps.

But how feasible is this?

2025, is only 5 years away and hydrogen boilers are currently only in prototype stages and air source heat pumps are still a little out of reach for mass home installation due to the infrastructure cost. Solar thermal panels are on option, but within the UK we cannot rely solely on this option due to the unreliable weather conditions. So this doesn't leave us with a firm solution considering the tight deadline placed on it.

What the experts say

Campaign group 10:10 Climate Action’s director Max Wakefield backed the move to end fossil fuel heating in new homes from 2025.

He said: “All our homes and buildings must be made efficient, affordable and zero-carbon within the next two decades to address the climate crisis. Ending the scandal of poor quality new homes is a no-brainer that’s good for everyone.” (The Independent)

What we think

Here at Mayne Gas Heating, although a re-brand might be order! We welcome any change which will help protect our planet for future generations and we have already started to see the upturn in demand for air source heat pumps. If this option becomes more widely available we can really see how it will benefit us for generations to come. But we definitely feel the government needs to do some more research too!
