The bathroom and the kitchen are always the centre points of the home. They are the areas which have also been most subject to taste and design changes over the last 50 years.
In the 1960's it was very rare for a home to have more than one main bathroom. It was often the case where toilet spaces and bath spaces were in different rooms, accessed by a hallway or in many terrace houses up and down the country bathrooms where placed as extensions at the back of ground floor kitchens.
The 60's where also the years of colour, it was common to seepsychedelia and bright hues of green, pink and blue in bathrooms. You wouldn't have been able to stroll into your local bathroom showroom and pick up a white bathroom suite, they were just not an option!
During the next 10 years, the colours still remained a trend in many bathrooms however they became more earthy, which was the time of 'dusky pink' and 'avocado bath suites'. Baby boomers and generation X would have been those purchasing the avocado bath suites in their first homes - and how proud they would have been! It was also not uncommon for wall-to-wall shag carpeting to be used in bathrooms during the 70's.
In the 1980's theVictorian style became very popular. Heavy duty China sinks and toilets with decorative features were definitely a must during this area. At this time the colours started to die down. There very a few dusty shades still available but pale greys, blues,peach and tealbecame popular choices.
The 1990's was the decade of wooden features,cabinetry was brought into bathrooms. Where wooden paneling was affixed to walls as decoration, replacing tiles and vanity units around sinks become very popular. While the bathrooms suites themselves were boasting more natural colours, the wooden features were often painted in brighter blues or greens.
In the early 2000's we saw that we would class as a more modern feel, we started to create more of aspa-like atmospherein our bathrooms. A more clinic style was adapted, were everything started to appear in white. We used a lot more glass, mirrors and lighting to create a large and open environment.
Since 2010 we have seen more of this spa-like feel brought into our bathrooms. The typical colours seen now are white bathroom suites, complimented by greys in tiles or wallpaper.
It is amazing to look back and see the changes over the last 50 years, between 1960 and 1990 we saw some major changes in style and trends which have not changed at the same rate in recent decades.
I wonder what will be on the cards for us next?
Will avocado bathrooms be the trend for the 2020's?
