Planning Restrictions Lifted for Heat Pump Installations in Grimsby

Great news for Grimsby homeowners. A key barrier to air source heat pump installation has now been removed. The 1-metre boundary requirement—once part of planning rules for domestic heat pump systems—has officially been lifted.
This change simplifies the installation process, particularly for properties with limited outdoor space.
What Was the Restriction?
Under previous planning laws, a heat pump had to be installed at least one metre from the property boundary. This rule was often difficult to meet, especially in terraced or semi-detached homes. The regulation was based on outdated concerns about noise levels.
Today’s heat pumps are much quieter and more compact. According to Worcester Bosch, the rule no longer reflected real-world performance or neighbour impact.
“This is a positive move. The 1m rule was a blunt tool. Removing it makes installations simpler and supports wider adoption,” said Worcester Bosch’s Director of External Affairs.
What This Means for Homeowners
It is estimated that up to 25 percent of installations previously needed full planning permission because of this restriction. That added delay, cost and uncertainty.
With the rule removed:
Most heat pump installations will now be permitted development
You can install faster and with less red tape
More properties are eligible for air source heat pumps
Installation costs may reduce due to fewer planning delays
