Are Hybrid Heating Systems the Future for UK Homes?

Updated: Jul 15

As heating technology evolves, a growing number of UK households are considering hybrid heating systems. These combine a gas or LPG boiler with an air source heat pump (ASHP) to provide a more flexible and energy-efficient solution for space heating and hot water.

What Is a Hybrid System?

A hybrid setup uses a heat pump for heating your radiators while a gas combi boiler provides hot water and backup heating during colder weather. This setup eliminates the need for a large hot water cylinder, making it suitable for homes with limited space.

Public Opinion: Support for Grants Is Rising

Recent research commissioned by Cadent shows:

  • 68 percent of UK homeowners believe hybrid systems should qualify for government grants

  • Over 50 percent would consider switching to hybrid systems if subsidies were available

  • 75 percent say the current £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) does not motivate them to install a heat pump

  • 60 percent would not switch if the total cost exceeds £7,000 after subsidies

The Cost and Carbon Advantage

Hybrid heat pump installations are 30 to 40 percent cheaper than full ASHP systems, typically costing £8,000 to £9,000, compared to £13,000 for a standalone heat pump.

They also offer strong environmental benefits:

  • Up to 60 percent carbon reduction compared to traditional gas heating

  • Potential to reach 80 percent reduction by 2030 as the UK electricity grid continues to decarbonise

Is Hybrid Right for Your Home?

The Heating and Hot Water Industry Council notes that many homes lack space for a hot water cylinder. Hybrid systems provide:

  • A space-efficient solution for properties built around combi boilers

  • A low-carbon alternative to traditional heating

  • Backup performance during peak winter conditions

  • A smoother path for households hesitant about full heat pump adoption
