Heat Pump Sales Soar as Boiler Upgrade Scheme Picks Up Speed

• April 2024: 2,380 applications

• May 2024: 2,987 applications

That’s nearly 3,000 households in a single month choosing to go greener with heat pumps.

Year-on-Year Growth

Compare those numbers to last year, and the trend is even more striking:

• May 2024 BUS applications were more than double those in May 2023

• Applications from January–May 2024 are up 71% year-on-year

This means more people are making the switch, while the full £7,500 grant is still available.

Installations Keep Climbing

It’s not just applications that are increasing. The MCS Data Dashboard reports nearly 5,000 certified heat pump installations in May alone.

That puts 2024 on track to surpass all previous years, with an average of 4,400 installs per month so far—up 26% on the 2023 monthly average.

“Government initiatives such as BUS are a critical part of the drive to make low-carbon heating more accessible and affordable,” said the MCS CEO. “It’s great to see homeowner confidence in home-grown energy is increasing.”
